Xi Jinping Holds Telephone Talks with President Moon Jae-in of the ROK at Request

On January 11, 2018, President Xi Jinping held telephone talks with President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea (ROK) at request.

Xi Jinping pointed out that Mr. President paid a successful state visit to China not long ago. Both sides reached important consensus on developing China-ROK strategic cooperative partnership and strengthening coordination in major regional and international affairs, which enhanced mutual trust as well as reinforced cooperation. China is satisfied with the improvement in China-ROK relations. In the new year, China is willing to work with the ROK to strengthen strategic communication, advance practical cooperation, properly handle sensitive issues and push forward the realization of greater development of bilateral relations, so as to make joint efforts to boost regional peace and stability. China supports the ROK to well host the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and wishes it a complete success.

Moon Jae-in thanked China again for the considerate arrangement on his visit to China not long ago, and expected ROK-China strategic cooperative partnership to maintain development momentum and achieve greater progress in the new year. The ROK side thanks China's support in well hosting the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

Briefing on the achievements of the recent high-level talks between the ROK and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Moon Jae-in expressed that the ROK attaches great importance to China's important role in the Korean Peninsula issue, appreciates China's support for the dialogue between the ROK and DPRK and extends gratitude to China’s efforts in promoting the settlement of the issue through dialogue and negotiation, as well as safeguarding peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula. The ROK is willing to work with China to remain committed to resolving the issue through dialogue and negotiation in a bid to safeguard peace and stability in the region.

Xi Jinping stressed that China has always supported the improvement of relations between the ROK and the DPRK as well as bilateral reconciliation and cooperation. China supports both sides in promoting ROK-DPRK dialogue and exchanges to gradually advance the settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue. At the moment, challenges and opportunities co-exist on the Korean Peninsula. It is hoped that the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics will not only bring about opportunities for the dialogue between the ROK and DPRK, but also become a beginning of the improvement of the Korean Peninsula situation. China is willing to enhance communication and cooperation with all sides, including the ROK, to strive for further positive results of the situation.
