On January 16, 2018, President Xi Jinping held telephone talks at request with President Donald Trump of the United States (US).
Xi Jinping pointed out that China-US relations have maintained stability in general and made significant progress in 2017. Maintaining a healthy and stable development of China-US relations conforms to the interests of the two countries and peoples, and is also the common expectation of the international community. Both sides should keep exchanges at high level and across all levels, give full play to the four high-level dialogue mechanisms and hold the second round of the dialogues in due time. China-US economic and trade cooperation has brought numerous tangible benefits to the two peoples. Both sides should properly solve the economic and trade issues of common concern in a constructive manner by opening the market to each other and making the cake of cooperation bigger. The two sides should actively push forward bilateral cooperation in such fields as militaries, law enforcement, drug control, people-to-people and cultural engagement as well as at sub-national levels, and maintain close communication and coordination on major international and regional issues. Both sides should meet each other halfway, respect each other, stay focused on cooperation, handle sensitive issues in a constructive manner, and respect each other's core interests and major concerns, so as to maintain the healthy and stable development momentum of China-US relations.
Donald Trump noted that the US attaches great importance to the relations with China and US-China cooperation, and stands ready to work with China to strengthen exchanges at high level and across all levels, expand practical cooperation, and well handle the economic and trade issues between the two countries, so as to push bilateral relations for greater development.
Xi Jinping introduced at inquiry China’s views on the current Korean Peninsula situation, and pointed out that there are some positive changes in the Korean Peninsula situation. All parties should make joint efforts to continue the hard-won momentum of relaxation, and create conditions for the resumption of dialogue and negotiation. Realizing denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and preserving peace and stability on the Peninsula conform to the common interests of all parties. It is of great significance for the international community to maintain solidarity on this issue. China is ready to continuously intensify communication, trust each other, respect each other and strengthen cooperation with the international community including the US, so as to make continuous headway in pushing the Korean Peninsula issue towards the direction of proper settlement.
Donald Trump expressed that the US attaches importance to China’s important role in the Korean Peninsula issue, and is willing to continuously enhance communication and coordination with China.
